Some majors and professional programs have their own accrediting bodies. A college or university needs special accreditation for these programs if their graduates are to use their degree. General college or university accreditation is not enough. You need to make sure that the individual major or program that you are considering also has been awarded its special accreditation if that is available.

Finding accredited programs

Most institutions are very proud of gaining such recognition. Program accreditation is usually listed in all admissions material and it is usually included in the description of the program on a college or university web site. If you do not see a statement about accreditation, ask. This is one of most important questions you need answered before you enroll.

If you do not find information about accreditation in the material a college or university sends you, ask an admissions counsellor. "What accreditation does your institution have? Has this major also received professional accreditation?"
