'Freedom' is the key word and yet how does one define freedom. Free from the expectations of others or ones own perception of the expectations of others. I submit that it is the freedom from ones own conceptions of oneself that is the true reward of elderhood.
Of course one assumes that one is in a sufficiently healthy state of body and mind to enjoy these rewards and appreciate them to the fullest.
Just as happy and healthy childhood leads to a good basis for a happy and healthy adulthood, so does a fruitful adulthood form the basis for a happy and satisfying 'elderhood'. Feeling of unfinished or untried tasks, remorse and regrets eat into the experience of a happy elderhood. While there still is a possibility of a second chance during adulthood that possibility becomes remote as we age.
