TA-65 Review

TA-65 Review. Longevity advice is all over the Internet. Take this, do that. There is an increasing number of supplements being sold that claim to be 'longevity supplements'. the question is "Is there any scientific evidence to back up a supplement's claims?" Hence this TA-65 Review - a look at the science behind this supplement and sources for buying the product.

Understanding this product.

First, you need to understand something about Telomeres. Telomeres are protective caps at the end of your DNA. The length of your telomeres are a marker of your biological age.

In 2009, scientists discovered that each time one of your cells divides, its telomeres get shorter. And when your telomeres get so short that the cell can no longer function, that cell either dies or enters into a permanent resting state called 'senacence'. These facts led researchers to investigate telomeres as a possible key to longevity.

Scientists at Geron Corporation, a California biotech company found that an enzyme called telomerase can lengthen telomeres. If your telomeres can be restored to an earlier length, the thinking goes, this will lengethen your lifespan.

Now scientists at the Geron Corporation have isolated a substance from the astralagus plant, that 'activates telomerase' and 'turns on' resting or senascent telomerase in cells. If inactive telomeres become active once again, greater longevity appears to result.

Geron Corporation has kept its extract from the plant so as to develop it as a pharmeceutical drug. BUT Geron has licensed TA-65 as a neutraceutical as a longevity supplement. This is what is being sold to consumers.

TA 65 Review of Scientific Research

In Febrary 2011 the journal Rejevenation Reseach published a paper. "A Natural Product Telomerase Activator As Part of a Health Maintenance Program" by Calvin B. Harley, Weimin Liu, Maria Blasco, Elsa Vera, William H. Andrews, Laura A. Briggs, and Joseph M. Raffaele.

This paper described a one year study in which 10 - 50 millegrams of TA-65 were administered along with a comprehensive dietary supplement pack to volunteers. The study also included
physcian counselling and laboratory tests over 3 - 6 month period. The most important conclusion made by the study was that TA 65 appeared to reduce the number of shortened telomeres.

Here is the abstract of the TA-65 review. (I have reformatted it to make the significant points stand out better.)

ABSTRACT: ( TA-65 Review )

Introduction: Most human cells lack sufficient telomerase to maintain telomeres, hence these genetic elements shorten with time and stress,
contributing to aging and disease. In January, 2007, a commercial health maintenance program, PattonProtocol-1, was launched
that included a natural product-derived telomerase activator (TA-65®, 10–50 mg daily), a comprehensive dietary supplement pack,
and physician counseling/laboratory tests at baseline and every 3–6 months thereafter.

Results: Here is an analysis of the first year of data focusing on the immune system.

1. Low nanomolar levels of TA-65® moderately activated telomerase in human keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and immune cells in culture; similar plasma levels of TA-65® were achieved in pilot human pharmacokinetic
studies with single 10- to 50-mg doses.

2. The most striking in vivo effects were declines in the percent senescent cytotoxic (CD8+/CD28-) T cells (1.5, 4.4, 8.6, and
7.5% at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, respectively; p = not significant [N.S.], 0.018, 0.0024, 0.0062) and natural killer cells at 6 and 12 months (p = 0.028 and 0.00013, respectively).

Most of these decreases were seen in cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositive subjects. In a subset of subjects, the distribution of
telomere lengths in leukocytes at baseline and 12 months was measured. Although mean telomere length did not increase,
there was a significant reduction in the percent short (<4 kbp) telomeres (p = 0.037).

3. No adverse events were attributed to PattonProtocol-1.(TA-65)

4. We conclude that the protocol lengthens critically short telomeres and remodels the relative proportions of circulating
leukocytes of CMV+ subjects toward the more “youthful” profile of CMV- subjects.

5. Controlled randomized trials are planned to assess TA-65®-specific effects in humans.

End of TA-65 Review

Clearly this study offers encouraging news. The authors of the article state, additional studies are planned and that is good news too since one study is not enough to support claims that TA-65 longevity solution is for all human kind.

TA 65 Review: Marketing a longevity supplement.

Effectiveness/reliability: The marketing of this product has capitalized on the results of this important but modest study. The scienfitic community usually seeks more than one study before
canonizing any supplement as a true longevity product. Several researchers have said that they are continuing with tests the product but those studies are not complete.

The company selling TA 65 as a longevity supplement seems to rely on personal testimonials claiming all sorts of health and life improvements as a result of taking their TA 65 supplement. Testimonials are not scienftif evidence - although many consumers are persuaded
by them.

TA 65 Review: Dosage
1 capsule (250 units) of TA-65 is effective in healthy adults in their 40's or 50's.

2 capsules Daily (500 Units) is recommended for persons in their 50's or 60's.

4 Capsules Daily (1000 Units) is recomended for those in their 70's or those who feel their immune system needs
strengthening.

Further it is recommended to include Magnesium and micronized resveratrol (like the Nitro250), when taking TA-65 to support your body’s natural way to increase it’s effectiveness. So the cost of those products need to be added to the total for effective supplementation.

COSTS: (TA-65 Review continued)

TA-65 suppements are not cheap!. The company recommends that you take the product under the oversight of a doctor. So there is the cost of medical supervision. And if you are doing this on your own, in additon to the cost of the supplement, you need to add in the cost of both the magensium and MCIRONIZED reserveratol (both of which the company recommends to be taken at the same time.
